Our Very First Galliard Booknic! 📚🧺 

Last Friday, the whole school came together to celebrate reading in a very special way as we held our first-ever Galliard Booknic!

The children were excited to bring in their favourite books from home, along with a picnic blanket and a tasty snack. We headed out onto the field, where everyone found a cosy spot to enjoy a good book, surrounded by friends and fresh air.

It was wonderful to see the children reading independently, sharing stories and chatting about their favourite characters. Here's what some of our children had to say about the Booknic:

“This is the best thing I've done in Year 2 because I could read my favourite book with my friend.” — Ella, 2A

“I loved it! I liked reading and having snacks together. I'm reading this book with my cousin because we like reading together. We swap books and borrow them from each other so we can talk about them.” — Yusra, 3W

“I shared my book with my friend – it's a book about me and is called 'Karter's Christmas Adventure'. I shrink in the book and help Santa deliver presents!” — Karter, 4P

“It was the best day of the year because we came to the field and we took a book and read.” — Emma, 3W

“I liked the Booknic because I could sit and read lots of facts with my friends. My book is a ‘lift-the-flap’ general knowledge book. Do you know that giraffes can sleep standing up? On every page, there’s a flap that you open, and there are more facts inside!” — Derval, 4C 

This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate reading beyond the classroom and see how books can bring people together. We were so proud to see the children sharing their enthusiasm, discovering stories and enjoying time with their friends.

We want all our children to see reading as a pleasure, both in school and at home. Sharing a bedtime story, swapping books or simply chatting about a favourite character can help nurture confident readers and a lifelong love of books.
