Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

At Galliard Primary School, we want every child to grow into a confident, capable, caring and responsible individual. Through Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Health Education (RHE), we help pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to make positive choices, build healthy relationships and keep themselves safe.

We use the 1Decision Comprehensive Curriculum to support the teaching of PSHE and RHE across the school. The programme provides a clear and progressive approach from year group to year group, allowing children to build upon their prior learning as they mature.

Through age-appropriate lessons, discussions and activities, children explore key areas including:

• relationships, friendships and respecting others

• physical health and healthy lifestyles

• mental health and emotional wellbeing

• keeping safe, including online safety

• families and people who care for us

• recognising and managing feelings

• making responsible choices and understanding consequences

• managing change, growing and developing

• money, careers and life in the wider world

• respecting differences and celebrating diversity

Lessons encourage children to discuss different situations, consider the choices available to them and think about the possible consequences of their decisions. This helps pupils develop important life skills, including communication, resilience, empathy, problem solving and decision making.

Our RHE curriculum is taught in an age-appropriate and sensitive way. Learning builds progressively throughout the school and supports children in understanding healthy relationships, personal boundaries, physical and emotional wellbeing, and how to seek help when they need it.

PSHE and RHE also support our wider work on safeguarding, British Values and pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Children are encouraged to respect different beliefs, cultures, families and ways of life, while understanding the importance of equality, kindness and respect.

Our PSHE and RHE curriculum is further enriched through assemblies, workshops and visits from external speakers, helping pupils explore relevant issues and apply their learning to real-life situations.

Our aim is for children to leave Galliard with the confidence and knowledge to look after their physical and mental wellbeing, develop positive relationships, express their views respectfully and make informed decisions as they move into the next stage of their lives.
